Our History
Nick Spangler grew up in Washington, D.C. When he was six years old, his mom and dad took their family to Chincoteague for a weekend. They stayed in a motel called the Bayview on Marsh Island. That weekend and trips to follow made a big impression on Nick. Sometimes, he'd daydream in school about Chincoteague. At 16, he spent the summer there, working in a restaurant at the foot of the old drawbridge. He had an apartment upstairs for $60 a month. In 1978, after his last day of high school, Nick made the move permanent—his dream come true. He spent the first couple years working on the water, and in the second winter, he got a construction job with the help of a friend.
After a couple years, when he was 20, work was scarce, so Nick and a coworker started subcontracting on the side. They got so busy that they never went back to their hourly job. Forty years later, Nick still loves the work! Spangler Construction began by doing mostly roofing and framing, subcontracting from other contractors. From there the company transitioned to more general contracting. About 20 years ago, Nick met Laura Lintz (Windwater Architects), and the two have been teaming up to create custom homes ever since. Nick's family has always supported the business. His sister, Liz, is the company's painter and quality control person. His stepson, Pat, is a partner in the business. |
